Bookmarks synchronization and back-up was my biggest problem since I started using Internet. I have tried different synchronization services and programs and I never was completely satisfied with them. When new browsers were built (Google Chrome, Firefox) it become a bit better, because they have synchronization ability. However, synchronization between different browsers was a problem anyway. Yes, I know, it is possible to import and export bookmarks, and save them as html file, but this is such a pain in a neck…

Old version of the XMarks won’t work with MacX Lion. It is necessary to completely remove old XMarks version using uninstall and install new one.

However, few days ago I tried XMarks.com for bookmarks synchronization. Thanks to this service, you can synchronize bookmarks between different browsers (IE, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari) and different computers. You need to install extension for each browser and synchronize your bookmarks. Extension is customizable. You can set up ‘automatic synchronization’, ‘synchronization on shutdown’, etc. Also you can synchronize passwords and open tabs.

If something went wrong, you can override bookmarks on server from computer and vise versa. I had problem once, when my Internet got disconnected and half of my bookmarks disappeared (that is a bug, probably). No problem – I went to my account on XMarks.com and recalled set of bookmarks from previous synchronization.

You can also set up different profiles for bookmarks synchronization, if you want keep separate bookmarks from work and home for example.

I like XMarks.com service so far. I have only few problems with it:

– Half of my bookmarks disappeared, when Internet connection was lost

– Extension for IE is sitting in a system tray

– IE bookmarks synchronization is slower than in another browsers
